Manzinoja family
from Pontresina
A journey into the past
Welcome to the website of the Manzinoja family from Pontresina

The Manzinoja family lived in Pontresina for over 200 years and helped shape the history of the Engadin.

At the time of the confectioners (beginning of the 19th century), Andrea Nuot Manzinoja ran the Café Helvetique in Niort, France. His son Elias Andrea Manzinoja acquired thorough legal knowledge through self-taught, was a sought-after legal advisor and later also mayor and councilor. Elias' son Peter Manzinoja was mayor of Pontresina. After his early death, his wife emigrated to America with 5 children. The descendants of his daughter Maria still live there today. Victorina Buchli-Manzinoja, granddaughter of Elias Andrea Manzinoja, built the Hotel Schweizerhof in Pontresina with her mother at the beginning of the 20th century. After her early death, her son Nicolo also emigrated to America and his descendants still live there.
After the death of the last member of the Manzinoja family in Pontresina in 1937, and the death of Andrew Manzinoja 1975 in Canada, the Manzinoja family name unfortunately became extinct worldwide.

Anna Huber-Sutter has written down the exciting story of the Manzinoja Family, which has been hit by many strokes of fate, for the sons of her cousin Victorina Buchli-Manzinoja who died young.
